About Ember

Ember is a free tool for learning how a stock portfolio is put together. It turns a few answers into an example mix of funds and companies, and it explains each choice so you can judge it yourself.

Not investment advice

Ember's portfolios come from fixed rules and public data. They don't account for your income, debts, taxes or anything else about your situation. Ember never connects to a brokerage and never buys or sells anything. If you're making real decisions with real money, think about talking to a licensed financial professional.

What Ember stores

  • Without an account: nothing on our side. Your answers in the builder are kept in your own browser so they survive a refresh. Clearing your browser data removes them, and so does Start over.
  • With an account: your email, the name you gave (if any) and the portfolios you choose to save. Each saved portfolio is visible only to you, unless you turn on its share link.
  • Share links: show the holdings and percentages. They never show dollar amounts, your answers or your email. Turning sharing off disables the link right away.
  • Logging in: Ember uses Supabase for accounts. Your login session is kept in your browser.

You can delete any saved portfolio from its page. Deleting a whole account isn't built into the site yet.

Where the data comes from

Ember tracks 1,490 companies: the members of the S&P 500, S&P MidCap 400 and S&P SmallCap 600. The company lists and industry codes come from Wikipedia. Prices and company figures come from Finnhub and are from October 23, 2026. Figures can be missing or out of date for some companies.
